Blue Light, Screens, and Your Eyes: What You Really Need to Know
Phones, tablets, laptops, televisions, and computer monitors are part of everyday life. Between work, school, entertainment, and social media, many of us spend hours every day looking at digital screens.
At Sunshine Optometry, we regularly hear questions about blue light and screen use:
Does blue light damage your eyes?
Do blue-light glasses actually work?
Can screens cause headaches or dry eyes?
What about children who spend hours on tablets and computers?
Should you wear special glasses while working at a computer?
The answers are a little more nuanced than many advertisements make them sound.
The good news is that normal use of phones, tablets, and computers has not been shown to expose your eyes to enough blue light to damage the retina. But that doesn't mean hours of screen use can't affect how your eyes feel.
For many patients, the bigger issue is digital eye strain.
What Is Blue Light?
Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. It has a shorter wavelength and more energy than colors such as red or orange.
Blue light isn't something created by smartphones. It's naturally all around us.
In fact, sunlight is by far our largest source of blue light. Computer monitors, smartphones, tablets, LED lighting, and televisions also produce blue light, but at much lower intensities than sunlight.
Blue light also isn't inherently bad. Exposure to light during the daytime plays an important role in regulating our body's internal clock, alertness, and sleep-wake cycle.
The issue is more about when, how much, and how long we're exposed to light, especially when screens are used late at night.
Can Blue Light From Screens Damage Your Eyes?
This is one of the most common questions patients ask us at Sunshine Optometry.
Based on current evidence, the amount of blue light emitted by normal digital devices is far below established safety limits and has not been shown to damage the human retina during typical use.
Some laboratory studies have shown that extremely intense blue light can damage retinal cells. However, those experiments often use light levels and exposure conditions that are very different from looking at a phone or computer in everyday life.
So if you spend eight hours working at a computer, you do not need to assume that your screen is slowly damaging your retina.
However, you may still experience uncomfortable symptoms after hours of screen use.
Why Do My Eyes Hurt After Looking at a Computer?
The more common problem is digital eye strain, sometimes called computer vision syndrome.
Symptoms can include:
Tired or sore eyes
Headaches
Blurry vision
Difficulty focusing
Dry or burning eyes
Watery eyes
Neck and shoulder discomfort
Eyes that feel worse later in the day
These symptoms aren't necessarily caused by blue light itself.
When we concentrate on a computer, phone, or tablet, we tend to blink less frequently and sometimes incompletely. That allows tears to evaporate more quickly and can make dry eye symptoms worse.
Your eyes are also constantly focusing at a relatively close distance. Long periods of near work can place additional demand on your focusing system.
Glare, screen brightness, poor posture, an outdated glasses prescription, and an improper working distance can all contribute as well.
The 20-20-20 Rule
One of the simplest things you can do is give your eyes regular breaks.
Try the 20-20-20 rule:
Every 20 minutes, look approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
It doesn't have to be exact. The goal is simply to stop staring continuously at something close to you.
While you're taking that break, blink several times normally as well.
It's a simple habit, but it can be very helpful for people who spend long hours working on computers.
Screens and Dry Eye
Screen use and dry eye frequently go together.
When people concentrate on digital devices, their blink rate often drops and their blinking can become incomplete. Less blinking means the tear film isn't being refreshed as consistently across the surface of the eye.
This can contribute to:
Burning
Stinging
Grittiness
Redness
Fluctuating vision
Watery eyes
Contact lens discomfort
At Sunshine Optometry, we see many patients who assume their symptoms are just from "too much screen time," when there may actually be an underlying dry eye problem or another vision issue contributing.
If your eyes regularly feel dry or irritated after working on a computer, a comprehensive eye examination can help determine whether the problem is coming from dry eye disease, your prescription, focusing problems, contact lenses, your work environment, or a combination of factors.
Depending on what we find, treatment may include changes to your eyewear, lubricating eye drops, dry eye products, or other treatment options.
Do Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses Work?
This is where marketing and science sometimes get mixed together.
Blue-light-filtering lenses are designed to reduce some of the shorter wavelengths of visible light reaching the eye.
They may be useful for certain patients, but they shouldn't be sold as a cure for every screen-related problem.
Current evidence does not strongly support claims that blue-light-filtering glasses:
Prevent retinal damage from digital devices
Prevent macular degeneration caused by screens
Eliminate digital eye strain for everyone
That doesn't mean these lenses are useless.
Some patients simply find certain lens designs more comfortable, and there is a more convincing reason to think about blue light when it comes to sleep.
Blue Light and Sleep
Light is one of the most important signals your body uses to regulate its internal clock.
During the daytime, exposure to light helps tell your brain that it should be awake and alert.
At night, darkness helps signal that it's time to prepare for sleep.
Bright light, particularly shorter-wavelength light, late in the evening can interfere with that process by affecting melatonin production.
That's one reason staying on a bright phone, tablet, computer, or television right before bed may make it harder for some people to fall asleep.
If you frequently use digital devices at night, consider:
Reducing screen brightness in the evening
Using your device's night mode or warmer color setting
Dimming household lights before bedtime
Avoiding unnecessary screen use during the hour or two before sleeping
Discussing blue-light-filtering lens options if you routinely work late at night
Blue-filtering lenses may be more relevant in this setting than as protection against supposed retinal damage from your laptop.
What About Children and Screen Time?
Children are spending more time with digital devices than previous generations.
Online homework, tablets, gaming, phones, and streaming all contribute to prolonged periods of near work.
The relationship between digital devices and childhood myopia, or nearsightedness, continues to be studied. Research has not established that screens alone directly cause myopia.
However, two factors consistently associated with childhood myopia are:
more near work and less time spent outdoors.
Screen time is often a form of prolonged near work, and time spent indoors looking at screens can also replace outdoor activity.
Parents should encourage children to take regular visual breaks and spend time outdoors each day.

Computer Glasses Can Make a Big Difference
Sometimes the best solution isn't a blue-light filter at all.

This can be especially helpful for people who:
Spend most of the day on multiple monitors
Experience headaches at the computer
Have trouble shifting focus between screens
Wear progressive lenses
Find themselves tilting their head to see their monitor
Experience eye fatigue later in the day
A traditional prescription is often designed primarily for distance vision or general everyday use. Your computer may sit at a completely different distance.

Anti-reflective lenses reduce distracting reflections on the front and back surfaces of your lenses. That can improve visual clarity and make glasses more comfortable under office lighting and while working with screens.
They also make your lenses look clearer when you're on video calls or being photographed.
For someone who spends all day in front of a computer, we would often prioritize a properly designed prescription and quality anti-reflective coating rather than simply choosing a lens because it says "blue light."
Sunglasses Still Matter More Outdoors
If you're concerned about light exposure and long-term eye health, don't forget the much stronger source of light your eyes encounter every day: the sun.

How to Make Screens Easier on Your Eyes
A few simple changes can make a surprisingly large difference:
Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Increase text size rather than leaning toward the screen
Reduce glare from windows and overhead lighting
Match your screen brightness to your surroundings
Use adequate room lighting
Limit unnecessary screen use immediately before bedtime
Spend time outdoors regularly
Keep your glasses or contact lens prescription current
And if symptoms continue despite making these changes, schedule an eye examination.
Persistent discomfort isn't something you have to simply accept as part of working on a computer.
Not Every Screen Problem Is a Blue-Light Problem
One of the most important takeaways is that blue light gets blamed for a lot of symptoms that may actually have another cause.
Headaches could come from an outdated prescription.
Blur could be caused by astigmatism.
Tired eyes may come from focusing problems.
Burning and fluctuating vision could indicate dry eye.
Neck discomfort may be caused by trying to find the right viewing zone through progressive glasses.
That's why an eye examination is much more useful than simply ordering a pair of generic "blue-light glasses" online.
